Bar Amundsen is a popular meeting point for hotel guests and locals. In the afternoon it is often used for aperitifs, and it is also the ideal place to gather for after-dinner drinks.
It is no coincidence that the whiskey bar has been named after one of Norway’s biggest polar heroes of all time. On June 17th, 1928, Amundsen held his last press conference at the Grand Hotel Terminus. He was actually photographed and interviewed by Bergens Tidende in the whisky bar. Along with other volunteers, he was trying to save the Italian polar explorer Nobile, who recently had crashed his airship on ice northeast of Nordaustlandet in Svalbard. The next day, Amundsen disappears without a trace in the Arctic glacier. This, together with Grand Hotel Terminus nickname Bergens Grand Old Lady and the fact that Roald Amundsen rightly can be called the polar research’s Grand Old Man, the bar has now been named Bar Amundsen.
In 2008 the bar was awarded for Norway’s best whisky bar because of its rich selection and dedicated service. At Oslo Whisky Festival, which annually attracts over 1400 whisky enthusiasts, a prize is awarded for Norway’s best whisky bar. In fierce competition with twenty other bars, we won the prestigious price.
We are very proud of being the only bar in Norway and the Nordic countries with gold-rating. We consider this to be the highest ranking a whisky bar can achieve. The news was released with the list of 2010, 2011 and 2012.
In February 2011 we were voted Bergen’s best bar during the Bergen Bar Awards, and two of our employees were among the four nominees for bartender of the year.
